5 Tasks for Building Tier 2 Capacity

As you begin Tier 2 implementation, consider these 5 tasks as starting points and simple ways to assess early progress.

Task 1: Prepare your team

  • Who is your champion and resident expert(s)?
  • Identify people who can take on the work of these "baby steps" - be realistic, rather than optimistic, about bandwidth

Task 2: Identify students who need support

  • Quick Win: use your currently existing data (teacher nomination, behavior referral data, attendance, etc) to identify students and move to Task 3
  • Best Practice: Use a screening tool like the Strengths & Needs Screener to identify students with externalizing and internalizing needs

Task  3: Match identified students to a support. Use this resource, or follow the “Tier 2 Decision Tree” when you add a support. (If student has an attendance concern, always start there!)

  • Quick Win: Start at least one Performance-based or Attendance support
  • Best Practice: Slowly build your support Menu to include Performance-based support, Attendance Support, and Acquisition-based Support

Task 4: Monitoring progress - how will you track student progress?

  • Quick Win: Attendance & Referrals: after you start an intervention check for data for an  increase in student attendance and/or decrease in disciplinary referrals
  • Best Practice: Individual Student Progress Monitoring
    • First, add an “informant” (the person who collects progress monitoring data) when choosing the student’s support. Then go to “Progress Monitoring” under the student’s support and “input data.”

Task 5: Review and decide - how will you adjust supports or transition students?

  • Go to “Decision Center” under the student’s support, and answer the two questions to access the recommended actions or next steps.
